Windows 7 tip of the week: Change behavior of taskbar thumbnails

A nice feature in Windows 7 is the way it displays the thumbnails in “stacks” in the taskbar for open programs. It saves taskbar space (by not having an icon for each open window) and it’s easy to use – you just hover over the icon and see the stack of thumbnails. However, you might prefer to automatically open the last window you were working on, instead of hunting through the whole stack. You can do that with a registry edit. As always, be sure to back up the registry before you begin.
- 1. Open the registry editor and in the left pane, navigate to the following key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerAdvanced - 2. In the right pane, right-click in an empty space and select New | DWORD (32-bit) value
- 3. Name the new value LastActiveClick
- 4. Double-click the new value and set the value data to 1
- 5. Click OK
- 6. Close the registry editor
