The Art of Negotiation

negotiationNegotiating is something every business owner needs to do at various times during the course of the business day. Some find it very difficult, while others enjoy it immensely. Whether it is with customers, suppliers, investors or prospective employees, we all spend time doing it. I’m sure everyone has their own tips and tricks when it comes to negotiating, but there are certain things we may do, unknowingly, that derail our progress.

An article I read today in Inc. Magazine, talks about some things that may “slip” out when we are in these negotiation conversation. Most time, we don’t even realize that we’ve said something that could change its course. What I garnered from this article is that simple words or phrases can make a huge difference. Things like deal fatigue, establishing a higher authority or not being the first to quote a price. Surely, we all have a multitude of thoughts about these things, but it doesn’t hurt to be reminded of their effects on the overall process.
